Bowlimia

I haven’t been feeling very well recently. Kinda bleary eyed with an upset stomach. Drinking too much beer and eating too many chips. Staying up too late at night as well. After weeks of this I finally figured out what’s wrong, but unfortunately the symptoms won’t subside for another month or so.

You see, I’m suffering from “bowlimia.” In layman’s terms, it’s a condition brought on by overexposure to postseason football games, to the point that you feel like you might puke.

Last night we had the prestigious GoDaddy.com Bowl from Mobile, Al featuring “what promises to be a dogfight,” according to media sources, between the N. Illinois Huskies and the Arkansas Red Wolves. Well, a “canine fight” anyway-------.

This was the 34th of 35 bowl games since December 17, 2011. The post-conference college season kicked off with the not-to-be-missed Famous Idaho Potato Bowl (I’m totally serious) and has featured such classics as the Beef ‘O’ Brady’s Bowl, the San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl, the New Era Pinstripe Bowl, and the Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl. Tonight in New Orleans we finally get this ordeal over with when the Allstate BCS National Championship game is played—not to be confused with the Allstate Sugar Bowl that also took place in the same city and stadium only six days before.

But as all football fans know, it ain’t over yet. The pros started their playoffs this past Saturday, so now my illness has advanced to “Superbowlimia” and will continue until Feb. 5.

Of course an immediate remedy is to just not watch the games. But for a sports fan in Ecuador who isn’t overly fond of futbol, which is often on like 6 channels at once, the lure of HD coverage in English is overwhelming.

So pop another beer and pass the chips. Yeah, I’m ready for some football.
